Auto ID Standards

Data Identifiers (DI) - These are defined by ANSI in "ANSI/FACT-1, Data Identifier Standard" documents. These identifiers are used with Code 39 bar code symbology. The following are some examples of Data Identifiers.

  • Postal Code: (52L) 98204 where "52L" is the DI for the postal code and "98204" is the postal code
  • Customer's Purchase Order Number: (K) 9602234-S where "K" is the DI for the Customer's Purchase Order Number and "9602234-S" is the Customer PO #

These two systems are not fully compatible. The identifier codes are different and each system will have few defined identifiers (and corresponding bar code field application types) which do not exist in the other. However, in both cases new identifiers are being added to the lists.

ANSI MH10.8M Standard
The "ANSI MH10.8M-1993 Standard for Materials Handling: Unit Loads and Transport Packages Bar Code Symbols" (ANSI MH10.8 in short) represents the best guideline or a "framework" for developing shipping compliance label specifications. It reflects modern trends in compliance labeling such as SSCC concept, AI / DI identifiers etc. It does not limit trading partners to a specific design. Any information, which has an AI / DI identifier assigned to it, can be placed in a bar coded format in one of 3 recommended segments of the label:

  • Carrier Segment (first from the top)
  • Customer Segment
  • Supplier Segment

Except for certain mandatory bar code fields such as postal code (zip code) for Extended and Common Label formats and the SSCC field for the Common format, it is up to the trading partners to decide what bar coded and / or human readable information to place on the labels.
